Mitcham is a residential suburb located 20 kilometres east of Melbourne, between Nunawading and Ringwood, and is bisected east-west by the Maroondah Highway and the Box Hill-Ringwood railway line. The City of Whitehorse is its local government area.

Mitcham took its name from Mitcham Grove, a farm owned by William Slater, who planted roses and herbs for fragrances and cures. The Mitcham region was mostly utilised for orchards, brickmaking, and pottery from its colonisation in the 1860s. Mitcham Post Office first opened its doors on June 1, 1884.

North of Whitehorse Road, Mitcham includes numerous big parks, including Antonio, Yarran Dheran, and a sports reserve. On the south side, there is a linear park with Yarra Valley Water and the Mitcham Reservoir occupying a considerable chunk.
